PRESS: Russia loses 2 points in Internet sustainability rating

MOSCOW, Sep 7 (PRIME) -- Russia’s 2019 rating among the countries with the most sustainable national Internet has degraded to the 13th from the 11th rank, which experts explain by the market’s growth and a slow switching to new protocol IPv6, business daily Kommersant reported on Monday, quoting Qrator Labs’ research.

The country ranked third in 2015, following the U.K. and the U.S. Now the top three countries are Brazil, Germany, and Switzerland.

In its research, Qrator Labs considered the operators whose failure can result in a loss of global availability of the bulk of autonomous systems of a national segment. In Russia, state-controlled telecom operator Rostelecom is such an operator, and disturbance on its network will make 5.08% of networks of the country’s Web unavailable.

The experts said that in a situation when small players are actively incorporated by large firms, a failure of such systems could provoke problems on the national level.

Researcher TMT Consulting said in a January–June study that the country has four Internet providers accounting for almost 70% of the total subscriber base -- Rostelecom, ER-Telecom, MTS, and VimpelCom.

The country also lacks an overall program of switching to protocol IPv6 from the older IPv4, which identify subscribers in a network.
